The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

It is significant that David, sometimes labeled as the “light of Israel,” shares his close relationship with God and his strong dependence on God in this psalm, the first half of which is a psalm of praise and honor of God while the second half is more of a pleading with God. Even David as the “light of Israel”considered God Himself as his “source of light.”

Some have thought this psalm was written when David was younger, perhaps even before he came to the throne of Israel; but others have said it was written in David’s older years after his departure into sin and then his return to God.

Some believe it was penned not for any special stage of his life but just as an expression of honor and devotion to God that anyone can use as an example when problems occur in his or her life.

The positive note should not be lost on us: by relying on God as our “source of light” and by depending on God through His word as our source of instruction, we, too, can have a significant and meaningful relationship with God.
