But You, O Lord, are a shield for me,My glory and the One who lifts up my head.I cried to the Lord with my voice,And He heard me from His holy hill” (Psalm 3:3-4).

Having been forced out of Jerusalem, David is now “on the run” from his son Absalom who wants to take not only his throne but his life as well; and he has just lamented to the Lord about those who have followed Absalom in turning against him.

In these two verses, he turns to a positive note of gratitude because he has the Lord to Whom he can turn in times of despair and he has assurance that the Lord has heard him and will answer his plea for help.

While David’s cry for help was answered in regard to physical battles, our cries come from a different place and require a different kind of answer: the Lord has not promised to lead us miraculously out of our physical circumstances today, but He has provided for us solutions to all of our spiritual difficulties.

We have something David never had: through Jesus, we have a true atonement for our biggest problem—that is, the problem of sin. By following the Lord’s direction out of the mire of sin, we can position ourselves to be prepared to meet Him in that Final Day when all will appear before Him and be held accountable.
