Punishment for Israel (8/2/2026)

Second in a series of studies in Isaiah 5

5“And now, please let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard:I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned;And break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down”

6“I will lay it waste;It shall not be pruned or dug,But there shall come up briers and thorns.I will also command the clouds That they rain no rain on it” (Isaiah 5:5-6).

Through Isaiah, God carries the parable a step farther here and minces no words as He tells the “inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah” exactly what He is planning in view of their rebellion against His word and their lack of appreciation for the blessings He has given them.

He plans to remove all of their defenses against their enemies as well as withholding the necessary moisture needed for producing a crop, making sure they can receive no benefit from the “vineyard.” This move on God’s part is not the result of His turning against His people: it is the result of their turning against Him.

The extreme measures in these two verses serve to indicate God’s disgust—His total displeasure—with His people for their lack of concern for spiritual matters that are important to Him: God wanted a people who appreciated Him and loved Him so much they would focus all of their being on pleasing Him.

God has that same desire for those of us living in the Christian Age: He does not want just a part of our devotion. He wants our complete focus as we live our lives in appreciation for His providing a fail-safe, spiritual escape from the darkness of this world.
