Second in a series of studies of Titus 2:11-15
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age (Titus 2:11-12), looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works” (Titus 2:13-14).
Continuing his instruction to the young preacher, Titus, Paul is quite specific in looking to the past event—the Supreme Sacrifice of Jesus on the cross—that makes possible mankind’s spiritual expectation for the future—the hope of Heaven.
The expressions “blessed hope” and “glorious appearing” refer to this same event—that is, to the Second Coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ for which all spiritually minded people are longing.
“Lawless deed” means any action we take that contradicts what God wants us to do. “Purify” refers to the redemptive process that occurs when we obey Jesus and follow His instructions, thus being forgiven of our “lawless deeds.”
When we take these actions, we become “His own special people” and we turn our focus toward the “good works” He has commanded in His word.
