“But You, O Lord, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
I cried to the Lord with my voice,
And He heard me from His holy hill” (Psalm 3:03-04).
David seems to be in a desperate situation as he pens these words of assurance to God: he is fleeing from his son on this eve of the battle with him and many supporters have left him since they believe God has forsaken him. In this passage, however, he appears to overcome his feelings of despondency and expresses both praise to God as well as his feeling of dependence on God.
David expresses complete confidence that God will take care of him “from His holy hill” (Jerusalem). Even though David is in exile from Jerusalem, he is filled with a faith that God will hear him.
Such expressions come from a faith deeply rooted in David’s soul and provide for us a supreme example: even though we can find ourselves dealing with highly troubling situations at times, we surely have never been faced with anything as serious as David is faced with here.
The question David’s situation should drive home to us is How do we react when we find ourselves in difficult situations? Leaving and forsaking God is not the answer. The answer is that we retain our faith in God and allow such situations as David’s to teach us how we should react to whatever life throws into our pathway.
