First in a series of studies of Titus 2:11-15

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age” (Titus 2:11-12).

This short letter to the young preacher Titus is designed to give him direction as to how he is to conduct his own life as well as to instruct him in the principles he is to teach those whom he has been sent to help spiritually.

The word “For” indicates that what follows gives context and purpose to the instruction he has given to the various categories of people he has just addressed. God’s “grace” is the basis of salvation now offered to “all men” and not just to the Jews.

Grace,” meaning undeserved favor, caused God to send His Son to sacrifice Himself for the spiritual benefit of all people. To obtain the salvation offered, all people must adhere to God’s designated requirements for righteousness: deny sinful behavior (“ungodliness and worldly lusts”) and submit to sober, righteous, and godly living.

God still has this same method of coming under His grace in place: to please Him and to be allowed into Heaven, we must follow His instruction—that is, obey the gospel plan of salvation as taught in Scripture.
