“Wait on the Lord;
Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the Lord” (Psalm 27:14).
The psalmist David appears to be talking to himself as he pens the closing verse of this psalm. Perhaps it is the accumulation of the stresses and challenges of his life that have led him to this moment, causing him to realize even more his need for showing dependence on the Lord.
To “wait” on the Lord means to have a strong faith in Him—to trust Him, to eliminate fear about the future and about how God’s promises will be fulfilled, to rely upon God for strength.
When we truly “wait” on the Lord, we will eliminate the idea that the only way life can work out well is for us to take charge and rely on our own intelligence, ingenuity, and skills. And when we “wait” on Him, He will “strengthen our hearts.”
What a life lesson David presents here. While we are taught self-reliance and independence, the Christian needs to be able to step back and trust God and allow His providence to work as He wills.
