The Wisdom of God (3/2/2025)

Joe Norton

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men” (1 Corinthians 1:25).

Trying to outguess God has always been a losing battle for people living in any age of time. Paul gives us a solid reason for this impossibility in this passage he pens for members of a congregation in serious spiritual trouble.

Paul has just described the folly of ignoring the wisdom of God and attempting to come up with ideas and practices that elevate the wisdom of man. It will not work, he says—and, in fact, he calls it foolish because God is wiser.

Using an extreme exaggeration, Paul says any wisdom of man is below the level of even God’s lowest point—His “foolishness” or His “weakness” (if it could be presumed that God has either of these traits).

With this foundation, Paul proceeds to write one of his most severe messages to those who have assumed themselves to be smarter than God as they have come up with religious practices and immoral behavior of which God highly disapproves.

This message should jolt us to a moment of reality if we ever begin to court doctrine, worship ideas, religious practices, or moral behavior that fly in the face of what God has commanded.
