Completion of Psalm 100
“For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations” (Psalm 100:05).
“For” means “because.” Thus, this passage provides us with a reason for the gratitude and praise we are to offer to God and Jesus. The key words are “good,” “mercy,” and “truth.”
“Good” takes on a new meaning when used in describing God. He is “essentially, absolutely, and consummately good.” As divinity, He is perfection in contrast to humanity that is flawed, even when we try our best to overcome our weaknesses.
“Mercy” describes God’s actions as He deals with imperfect people who want His blessing and favor without recognizing His authority. God’s mercy was in action when He had Jesus die on the cross as well as when he does not immediately annihilate those who sin against His word.
“Truth” refers to God’s word in contrast to perversions of it by those who lack respect for Him. It is in the Gospel that we find real truth, revealing to us doctrinal purity and practical instruction about life as God would have us to live it.
Jesus gives us the pathway to God’s truth: “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’ ” (John 8:32).
