Sixth and Final in a series of studies of 1 John 1:5-10
“If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us” (1 John 1:10).
John revisits this tenet of the Gnostics who claim they do not sin (found in verse 8), but he adds a component: they make God a liar, a sin so extreme it is difficult to internalize.
Since Paul declares through divine inspiration (Romans 3) that “all have sinned,” it is a direct contradiction of God to claim that one has lived a sinless life. To make such a declaration is tantamount to saying God’s word or His truth “is not in us” or has no meaning to us.
Of all the doctrines and principles we are taught in scripture, the most important is the reverence and respect we are to have for God. As our awesome Creator, God has absolute sovereignty over us. We dare not question Him on any front.
