"The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Whom shall I fear”

The Lord is the strength of my life;

Of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:01).

The occasion for David’s declaration of his devotion to the Lord and of his dependence on Him is not known for sure, but one thing we do know: it is an expression of honor and devotion to God that anyone could use as an example.

David mentions “fear,” an emotion every human has felt at some point in his or her life. David could have been remembering his early life when he was young and foolish, having made several serious mistakes.

Or he could have been remembering his older years after he had returned to God and was continuing to “live down” the mistakes of his earlier life. His point is that “fear” should not keep us from keeping our commitment to the Lord, no matter what our age.

Fears can be clothed in many garments: fear of physical harm, fear of tragedy, fear of illness, fear of speaking up for our faith, even in dangerous circumstances. These and other fears should never keep us from remembering that it is the Lord who is “the strength of (our) life.”
