For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6).

As he continues his instruction to Roman Christians, the Apostle Paul here emphasizes the necessity of focus, teaching them the importance of walking according to the spirit and not according to the flesh. The mind is central to our relationship with God—we become what we think.

“Carnal” refers to things of the earth; so, to be “carnally minded” is to allow things of this world to occupy our minds instead of spiritual matters. To be “spiritually minded” means to allow the teachings of the Spirit (found in the New Testament) to occupy our minds and to direct our actions in life.

Being “carnally minded” results in “death,” meaning separation from God, both in this life and in eternity. The reward of being “spiritually minded” is spiritual life with Jesus and God in this life and the peace of knowing our submission will allow us an eternal home in heaven.

To any forward-thinking person, the correct focus is overwhelmingly simple: surely no one would choose an eternity of punishment over the beautiful gift of an endless life with God—that is, if we are willing to submit to His will.
