First in a series of studies of 1 Corinthians 10:12-14
12“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14“Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry” (1 Corinthians 10:12-14).
Arrogance and overconfidence are never commanded in Scripture. In fact, they are condemned, and humility is enjoined. As children of God, our job is to recognize our insignificance in the great scheme of things and look to God as the source of our strength.
Overconfidence has probably led more people down a path to spiritual destruction than any other temptation—that is, our thinking we are too strong in the faith to allow surrounding negative factors or persuasive unbelievers to lead us down the wrong path.
Whatever our relationship with God—and no matter how intelligent we may think we are—we must be guided in all matters by His word, even when it disagrees with what we would like to do.
Humility before God should be easy when we realize how wonderful God is, how powerful He is, and how much He has loved us in providing for our spiritual welfare through Jesus. May this realization strengthen our faith in Him and increase our dependence on Him.
