First in a series of studies of Hebrews 3:12-14
“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12).
Sad it is when a believer begins to waver in his or her faith and begins drifting toward caring more about the things of this world than the things of God. The priority of every faithful child of God is to be strong in the faith, realizing that God is all powerful.
In this passage, the writer of Hebrews sounds a distinct warning against wavering because it can lead one to depart from God. He even proclaims that such actions come from an “evil heart of unbelief,” a statement that may sound harsh, but it is the essence of this passage.
Because of the potential of departing from God, this passage along with others admonishes Christians to bolster their faith at every turn and to avoid giving in to the wiles of the devil. The wonderful news is that we have the means we need to increase our faith and to mature as Christians—that is, through reading, meditation, and prayer.
