But the path of the just is like the shining sun,

That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18).

In contrast to the teaching in the four previous verses, Solomon turns to positive instruction for those who want a relationship with God that will lead them to the eternal home with Him.

Calling them the “just,” Solomon uses a simile to picture such a life: “like the shining sun.” The simile here compares the progression of the sun as it grows ever more brightly as the day unfolds to the maturing process of a child of God who grows more devout in his or her faith as spiritual maturity takes place. The “perfect day” refers to mid-day when the sun is directly overhead.

The New Testament teaches this same kind of progression when a dedicated child of God grows and learns as God intended. In his writings, Peter calls it “adding to your faith.”

The message is clear: if we want to be “on board” with God, we must increase our faith and our faithfulness as we mature and become more spiritually cognizant. Our service, then, is performed, not just because we feel we have to, but because of our love and appreciation for Him.
