“Like the legs of the lame that hang limp Is a proverb in the mouth of fools” (Proverbs 26:7).
Solomon’s well-known attitude toward those who lack “wisdom” shines through clearly in this verse that is set in the middle of a series of descriptors of a person he labels as a “fool,” that is, a person “… who acts unwisely or imprudently; a silly person.”
A “proverb is “a short pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth or piece of advice.” His message is that a word of wisdom in the mouth of one who does not have the capacity or training to use it well is a total waste.
Wisdom comes through education and experience—that is, we gain knowledge and then develop the ability to apply that knowledge appropriately. If we fail in the process, we come under the category of those described here.
Throughout Scripture, we (God’s people) are taught to absorb the instruction given and to use wisdom in applying it to our lives so that we can live righteously and please God. When we live in such a way, God can cleanse our unrighteousness and accept us to live with Him in Heaven.
