“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).
Filled with piety and devotion, this psalm has been acclaimed by some Jewish scholars as David’s most excellent. He has explored God’s divine attributes of omniscience and omnipresence before asking God to help him in a self-assessment.
David knows his heart, and he knows his behavior; but he asks God to try him just to be sure he is measuring up to God’s expectations. He wants to be sure he does not miss the mark.
There could be no more appropriate example for us to follow than the one David presents in this passage. We strive to live up to the standard that God has established in His word; but, as humans, we still have some of the frailties of the flesh—Paul has it right when he says that “All have sinned….”
Making our calling and election sure is always a safe harbor for us to sail into. By maintaining a keen awareness of our humanity and by keeping a repentant heart toward God always, we can be sure that we can receive that ultimate reward for which Jesus died.
