Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples! For His merciful kindness is great toward us, And the truth of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 117:1-2).

Addressed to all of the heathen nations of the earth, this psalm offers an explanation about the kind of reception they can expect from God when the dispensation of the Messiah becomes effective.

Since the Jews have been recipients of the Lord’s “merciful kindness” under the Law of Moses, they know about the goodness of God already. This psalm, the shortest chapter in Scripture, is actually foreshadowing the coming Christian system.

The psalmist is teaching that under Jesus, people in every nation and of every race will have the opportunity to experience God’s mercy and kindness, the greatest indication of which is the offer of forgiveness and eternal salvation through obedience to the truth offered in the New Testament.

This profound message of comfort and truth should offer assurance to every follower of Jesus as well as incentive and encouragement when we become doubtful or discouraged. Our Praise to the Lord should always be in the form of dedication and faithfulness.
