Happy are the people who are in such a state;

Happy are the people whose God is the Lord!” (Psalm 144:15).

Having assumed the throne of Israel, King David expresses in this psalm His gratitude to God for His blessing as well as appealing to God for His continued protection against enemies who are still plaguing the nation.

In doing so, he has laid out the condition of those who are recipients of such a request: he says those in “such a state” are happy; that is, those who have such blessings from God are happy. But he immediately follows this comment with an expression about those who are really happy: “the people whose God is the Lord.”

Even though he made this statement in regard to people of old, such a statement applies to people of every age: a reading of the New Testament shows that people who have God are those who are “happy;” that is, they are filled with “joy.”

One of the prevailing themes of the New Testament is that people who have come to the Lord are a “joyful” people—they are happy because they realize they have been redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus and, as such, have the promise of an eternal reward in Heaven.
