Second of a two-part series on Psalm 139
9 If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me” (Psalm 139:9-10).
Continuing his discussion of extremes to illustrate the tremendous power of God, David here goes from high to low—that is, from “the wings of the morning…(to) the uttermost parts of the sea.”
This entire psalm, proclaimed by some as his most excellent, is actually a song of praise to God, lauding His omniscience, His omnipresence, and His omnipotence and closing with his appeal to God to examine him and to set him on the right path for salvation.
While offering praise in these verses, David also shows his undying faith that God will always provide guidance for him, no matter where He finds him. He even adds a word of emphasis at the end by mentioning that it is God’s “right” hand that will keep David close.
Even when the poetic language becomes somewhat dramatic, we can still learn a strong lesson about our own faith: we should sense the presence of God, no matter in what circumstance we find ourselves; and, as well, we should allow the guidance God provides in His word to lead us at all times.
